ABSTRACT

In this era of focusing on the etiology and treatment of mental health challenges in light of neurobiological considerations, clinicians are compelled to consider the rationale and implementation of interventions in light of the brain. The effect on the brain of child abuse is phenomenal. For example, in research of child subjects with PTSD, there is evidence of broad neuronal atrophy and diminished devel - opment (De Bellis and Zisk, 2014). With this being the case, therapists have a responsibility to honor not only developmental level, but also neurobiological realities. Creative arts interventions, as discussed in this book, look to do this. This chapter focuses on one of these, in the discussion of sandtray therapy.
