ABSTRACT

I (Jon) was born into a family obsessed with sport, within a city (Pittsburgh) obsessed with sport, in a country obsessed with sport. My father played college football at Johns Hopkins University in the early 1950s; my mother nurtured and supported every imaginable organized and nonorganized sport-related activity, enabling our family to engage in sport without fear of not eating, having clean uniforms, or showing up late. All of my brothers participated in multiple sports through college, continuing to do so into their fifties and sixties. One brother and his son are attorneys representing professional sport associations; my sister was a cheerleader in high school, supporting her daughter through a successful college career in field hockey; all of my children, nephews, and nieces are active sport enthusiasts.
