ABSTRACT

From the 1950s onward, the Egyptian media was predominant in the Arabic-speaking world. This was partly because Egypt’s size and political influence (especially in the 1950s and 1960s) was so powerful, as was its centrality in terms of cultural significance. The Egyptian media had lively news-papers, with al-Ahram considered the best newspaper in the Arab world. There was censorship, but they had a lot of latitude.
