ABSTRACT

Like several of the other chapters in this volume, this one is entirely original to this source. The ideas behind these analyses emerged as a result of discussions between the author, who is completing her PhD at the University of California, Irvine in child development/developmental psychology, and this volume’s editor (the author’s father). The paper has been facilitated by the access Jennifer had to longitudinal data on childrearing practices collected in connection with a national study (see National Institute for Child Health and Human Development Early Child Care Research Network 2001).
