ABSTRACT

This book has presented analyses of high-speed rail’s performance based on the experiences of countries in Asia and Europe where HSR has been built, along with discussions of forecasting and evaluation approaches used in these cases. It also has presented a variety of assessments of California’s ongoing efforts to develop a high-speed rail system linking the northern and southern regions of the state. In this concluding chapter we discuss the lessons that can be drawn from the international examples and the California case, focusing in particular on high-speed rail’s potential to increase sustainability.
