ABSTRACT

We do not know the identity of the author of this group of poems, who was clearly familiar with Sulpicia’s poems (see above). Scholars have suggested that he might be Tibullus, or the young Ovid, or an unknown contemporary of Tibullus. J. Hallett (2002) has argued that Sulpicia herself wrote these poems as well as the epigrams III 13–18. Some striking echoes between lines of the Garland and Ovid’s Metamorphoses make a strong case for a date of composition later than the publication of the Metamorphoses in 8 c.e.
