ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between design, emotion and museum learning. Like schools and universities, museums are pedagogical sites but they are not only concerned with learning. It applies key networked learning concepts to analyze the visitor's story. Learning in a museum context involves many different communicative modes: written texts, spoken texts, 3D objects, visual images, moving images, databases, music, live performances, and hands-on activities. The chapter involves information and communication technologies (ICT), including Facebook, Twitter, wikis, blogs, iPhone apps, and so forth. It draws on two social-semiotic tools: Binding and Bonding. Binding and Bonding are tools drawn from social semiotics, which has been strongly inspired by the research of a group of linguists working with systemic functional theory (SFT). Binding and Bonding are equally applicable to ICT and have already been applied to the analysis of a hypermedia art adventure for young children.
