ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on Edward Carpenter, although his influence was disguised because of his triple handicap of being Atheist, Homosexual and Socialist. It explores Carpenters always faltering reputation, not as some act designed to induce pain in the homosexual reader, but in order to introduce Carpenters work once more to gay people who can but find it exhilarating and uplifting. Thus Democracy is announced as a controlling idea, and considering the list of things it will change, politics, art, science, religion, customs and methods of daily life, there is no surprise that many critics have concentrated on Carpenter's Socialism. The modern homosexual attitude to sexuality and it is the attitude that is again and again used against us by the homophobic elements of society. The society is more and more taking on this type of attitude towards sexual relations, marriage and fidelity, makes homophobia less and less logical if fear of something that cannot hurt one can ever be logical.
