ABSTRACT

This chapter address the following: why should we think there is any interesting connection between seeing-as and novelty? Or, if there is not an interesting connection, what, if anything, is illuminating about considering why we might think that there is? This chapter aims to justify interest in, and establish a coherent background for, this collection by offering some brief explorations of the above questions and concerns. It presents an outline of the relations between seeing-as and novelty, which can be elaborated, or opposed, in a wide variety of ways, and inasmuch as this is the case, only intended to serve as useful points of comparison when exploring the terrain. The chapter expresses a more interesting connection between seeing-as and novel concepts might be thought to run in the opposite direction to the intuition. It also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
