ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a definition of workplace bullying, and discusses the types of bullying behaviours, bullies and bullying situations. The chapter provides specific advice for employers and employees on how to respond to workplace bullying situations and guidance for managers on how to prevent bullying and build a respectful workplace environment. It describes the profile of New Zealand's national culture as depicted in the cultural frameworks of Geert Hofstede and the Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) project. A number of frameworks have attempted to categorise and compare national cultures according to a series of essential cultural values. Several of these cultural comparisons have included New Zealand. Hofstede's original framework categorised national cultures according to four dimensions, power distance, individualism-collectivism, masculinity-femininity and uncertainty avoidance. The chapter concludes by speculating on how New Zealand's positioning on various cultural dimensions may inhibit or facilitate workplace bullying.
