ABSTRACT

Australian cities face significant challenges due to a legacy of car-based urban development, burgeoning travel demand and urban congestion. Inner city revitalisation and changes in suburban design in line with the New Urbanism are improving land use patterns. Transport planners are finally moving to prioritise public transport ahead of the private car and cycling is gaining increased investment and ridership. New technologies and the decline of fuel taxes due to electrified vehicles present new challenges. Planners will require different skillsets to address urban transport needs in this new paradigm.
