ABSTRACT

This chapter assesses Australian planning research since the 1970s. It examines grant success, publication output, journal quality, impact of academics and key topics. These topics are situated within the context of higher education reform. Using qualitative and quantitative analyses, findings point to many scholars publishing in practitioner-oriented journals. Citation rates are comparatively lower than for countries such as the USA. Emerging trends suggest a reorientation of planning research towards both higher quality journals and a more diverse range of subjects, with policy impact as a key concern.
