ABSTRACT

In 1992, Zell Miller delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in support of Bill Clinton over George Herbert Walker Bush. Twelve years later, he made history as the fi rst politician in modern history to cross over party lines when he delivered the keynote address for the Republican National Convention (RNC). In 2004, and in the exact same location as 1992, Madison Square Garden, Miller endorsed the son of the man he had advocated against in the previous decade. While Democrats bemoaned Miller’s choice, Republicans were quite pleased. As Roddy (2004) explained, “Zell Miller [was] a sort of ballistic missile, affi xed to the podium of the Republican National Convention and pointed directly at his own party” (p. E1).
