In the epistemic sense, it is a difference between types of claims. Most of the things studied by the natural sciences such as atoms, molecules and tectonic plates have a mode of existence which does not depend on being experienced, so they are ontologically objective. Status functions provides deontic powers, and they are rights, duties, obligations, requirements, permissions, authorizations, etc. In spite of the incredible complexity of human societies, it seems that the underlying structure of civilization has a rather simple form. Status Functions creates a certain type of linguistic representation, and it serves to organize society along institutional lines. They organize hierarchical and power relations. The author created the institutional reality by representing it as existing and it is another way of saying that Status Functions by Status Function Declarations.
