ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on the study of the relationship between development patterns of Latin American economies, particularly those that have been based on the wide availability of natural resources, and welfare states. It argues that the welfare states cannot be discussed independently of the type of prevailing productive structures, and that the particular patterns of resource based development, in terms of structural heterogeneity and high volatility, pose particular political economy challenges for sustainable development.
