ABSTRACT

Since the 2010 Census was conducted, there has been a parade of headlines informing the American public of the great demographic changes underway in the United States population. Examples of such headlines include: “Most Children Younger than Age 1 Are Minorities,”1 “Asians Fastest-Growing Race or Ethnic Group in 2012,”2 “13% in U.S. Foreign-Born, a Level Last Seen in 1920,”3 and “U.S. Will Have a Majority-Minority Population by 2043.”4 This growing diversity has largely been driven by immigration. Although immi - gration is certainly not a new phenomenon in the United States, changes in immigration policy in the 1960s spurred significant changes in immigration trends that have led to our current demographic makeup.
