ABSTRACT

Uses of mobile media technologies have been changing various aspects of our day-to-day activities. Especially, with the advent of smartphones, the feel of connectedness may have changed through social media services (e.g., LINE, Facebook, and Twitter). How do social media contribute to shape and reshape our conventional communication behavior? What are the characteristics of our communication via social media? The present study aims to understand the ways in which social media practices may influence the relationships among family members. To anchor our discussion, we will refer to an on-going research project in Japan in which we focus primarily on daughter–mother relationships.
