ABSTRACT

Knowledge intensive entrepreneurship (KIE) takes place in sectors, which may differ along several relevant dimensions. Several studies on innovation in sectors have examined these dimensions and these differences. In this chapter, we use the concept of sectoral system in order to identify and measure some key differences across sectors that affect KIE. By using the AEGIS Survey we identify several dimensions of a sectoral system which lead us to propose five different sectoral contexts in which KIE takes place, and which encompass both manufacturing and services. The outcome of our empirical analysis is a taxonomy. On the basis of this taxonomy we provide insightful implications about the impact of public policies on entrepreneurship.
