ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at ubiquity understood both as a discursive trope and a lived materiality while also extending the model of ubiquitous computing to cosmic media. The Big History model, a model that studies both human and nonhuman history, back to the early days of the Earth and the universe, is attempted to frame ubiquity and complexity. Interdisciplinarity as the heuristic model of complexity suffers from the same derangement of scale. Cosmic media takes seriously, and responds to, the derangements of scale resulting from intensity and extensity. Media objects and histories as well as processes of technological mediation are increasingly regarded as ecological, biological, geological, and, ultimately, cosmological. The field of Ambient Media strives to define the media environment and determine the relations within it, moving from the promise of service to that of care in order to exploit a political opportunity.
