ABSTRACT

The nature and possible value of the bond between humans and their companion animals has begun to receive attention from professionals involved in the behavioral sciences and in health care. A few investigators have specifically addressed the question of the role of the companion animal in the family system. This review summarizes a number of studies dealing with the relationship of companion animals with humans at different stages of life, as well as research concerning the possible role of the companion animal in both the functional and dysfunctional family system. The review concludes with an evaluation and discussion of research to date and suggestions for future investigations.
