ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the part 3 of this book. The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) were designed to comprise 85" of the content taught at each grade level. This gives states the opportunity to add high-priority academic content of their own choosing to the CCSS. As a result, many states have their own, state-specific CCSS for English Language Arts (CCSS-ELA) and CCSS for Mathematics (CCSS-M) documents available online through the state's Department of Education. Despite the apparent lack of connection between the CCSS-M document and the CCSS-ELA document, the development teams who wrote the standards seem to have had similar goals for students: comprehension, construction, and critique; argument and evidence; strategic use of appropriate tools and skills; and a mindset that supports ongoing learning feature prominently in both lists.
