ABSTRACT

The Common Core State Standards for Mathematics present two different types of standards: standards for mathematical practice and standards for mathematical content. These two sets of standards coalesce around the central importance of understanding mathematics. Students who learn a step-by-step procedure for solving a particular type of mathematics problem can execute the procedure and get the correct answer: This is how people were taught to do math when they were youngsters. The chapter presents an overview of the Standards for Mathematical Content, organized by domain. The standards within each domain are sequenced by grade level to show the student learning trajectories within the domain. Each individual mathematical content standard is typically followed by a cluster of substandards essential to students' full understanding of the main standard. Modeling with mathematics involves students applying mathematics to real world problems and communicating with others about their reasoning, procedures, and solutions to the problems under consideration.
