ABSTRACT

The exploration of capacity limitations has always been a basic theme in the study of human information processing. Capacity limitations have been studied, to give just a few examples, in areas ranging from the detection of near-threshold sensory stimuli, to selective attention, to iconic memory, to pattern identification, to short-term scanning, to short-term rehearsal, to coding, to short-term forgetting, to long-term storage, retrieval, and for getting. Furthermore, the techniques used to study these limitations have varied widely, including reaction-time measurements, accuracy of per ception of near-threshold stimuli, and the retention of clearly perceived stimuli.
