ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book. The book is divided into four parts: the first part introduces the main themes and challenges to be addressed. The second, third and fourth parts explore the interplay between culture and international economic law, international intellectual property law, and European law respectively. The book examines the different developmental stages of the debate, contextualizing it in the current discourse on global governance. It also explores the ways in which culture has been integrated into the European Union's (EU) external economic relations, and in particular into its common commercial policy. The book analyses a number of protocols on cultural cooperation that accompany multilateral and bilateral trade agreements entered into by the EU. Designed to facilitate cultural exchanges, such protocols frame a strengthened policy dialogue on culture and cultural diversity.
