ABSTRACT
However the rapid progress of the speculative sciences, particularly since the end of the last century, called for analogous improvements in the arts. Physics, chemistry, even mechanics, had become richer through several important discoveries. All the sciences, enlightened by judicious experiments, enriched by superior minds, advanced by giant steps; and nevertheless, the workshops still followed their old routines and looked to justify defective procedures by old-fashioned theories, shown to be false for a long time.
