ABSTRACT

Examination of the occupational issues of qashabiya production reinforces our hypotheses and results about the situation of women processors of raw material for weaving and weavers. It is clear from the research that it is very difficult for women in these communities to manage the health risks associated with the traditional fiber industry under complete absence of insurance cover and safety regulations. Women producers of qashabiya are regarded as home-based, non-productive individuals only because they are working at home. These women are contributing to the national economy and sustaining a symbolically powerful, traditional garment which is their national heritage, and their work also improves the livelihoods of many rural households. The situation looks even worse as such an important profession, preserved over generations, is not regarded through a legal lense simply because it is performed at home by powerless women.Considerations for an inclusive growth strategy are highly recommended.
