ABSTRACT

The promise of web-based production tools and exhibition platforms for showcasing Latina/o subjectivities, and particularly for empowering Latina/o writers and producers, stands in sharp contrast to the realities of Latina/o representation and creative authorship in broadcast and cable television. The first decade of the 2000s did witness a slight increase in visibility for Latinas/os on television and as series creators and producers. Latina/o web series of all varieties explore complex racial, ethnic, gender, and sexuality subjectivities through the development of multi-dimensional Latina/o narratives and characters, many with multiple marginalized identities. East WillyB demonstrates the manner in which contemporary Latina/o web series and their production teams are attempting to represent Latina/o identities that are ethnic and region specific, as was the case with early independent Chicana/o and Puerto Rican media. The question of funding raises our final area of focus and an important area for future research: the sustainability of Latina/o web series.
