ABSTRACT

The main organizing force behind Platform Seoul was Samuso: Space for Contemporary Art-a curatorial initiative lab the author had founded in 2005 with the aim to envision and put into practice innovative methods of curating that move beyond the conventions of the white cube gallery space. Hence, Platform Seoul was intended as a process of collaboration among curators, artists, critics, and researchers both in Korea and elsewhere for five consecutive years. The exhibition as a curatorial project also included an academic symposium, 'Art and Society', which focused on the social engagement of art across different levels of society. Platform Seoul continued for five years, covering a variety of commonly shared issues-artists versus viewers, new commissions, methods of art viewing, experiencing artworks, participation, the position of institutions, the formation of community, the role of the exhibition as the field of education, the social role of art, and the everyday.
