ABSTRACT

The meaning of teaching varies greatly around the world. In 1987 I interviewed professors in a number of countries about their roles as professors and teachers. My assumption when starting this research was that a desire for good teaching was a universal concept and that systems of higher education around the world considered teaching an important ingredient in the educational process. I was socialized in this way; surely others were as well. My goal was to explore the forms of the concept from a crosscultural perspective.
