One of the first women in France to support herself by her writing, Madame de Villedieu (c. 1640-1683), a prolific novelist, poet, and playwright, made significant contributions to the evolution of the French novel. So well known in her own time that spurious works were published under her name to assure their good sales, Villedieu was also popular in England thanks to contempoO rary translations.
