ABSTRACT

The author sit to construct an introduction fitting to the delicious, painful and stirring set of essays, he glance at the newspaper, covering the story of rape of a young woman, age 17 at the time, legally classified as having mental retardation, by a group of four plus young, white males, in their basement. Serial fellatio, insertions of brooms and bats are acknowledged by all. The defense calls her the 'suburban Lolita', and brings forth a 'history of promiscuity'. The prosecution paints her a pitiful 'misfit' with the 'mind of a child'. The psychologist for the young woman tries to interrupt the abusive discourse which justifies male violence, and tries to tame the patronizing, perhaps equally violent discourse, which paints the young woman as, simply, an invalid, or in-valid. But the 'best' her side can do is represent her as unable to provide consent, even if consent were 'apparent' to the young men.
