ABSTRACT

American, like a large portion of the world, was captivated by Master Mind in the mid-1970s. The game was invented by Mordechai Meirovich, a postal employee in Israel, who first exhibited it at the 1971 Nurnberg Toy Fair. Representatives from Invicta Plastics, a Leicester, Great Britain games manufacturer recognized its potential and arranged to produce, package, and retail four different models. The popularity of the game rests at least in part on its appeal to the relative skill of the player. Joe Ballester, assistant games buyer for the Brentano's bookstore chain, noted, "Chance plays an important element in the first three tries. After that it's logic". This dimension has even led to its utilization within the classroom. Manufacturers of educational materials such as Cuisenaire in New Rochelle, New York, and J. L. Hammett in Braintree, Massachusetts, for instance, promoted the game as a means of teaching logic in schools.
