ABSTRACT

The household electrical appliances industry was first established in Hong Kong in the 1950s. In 1955, only three factories produced electric fans, heaters, electric hair-dressing apparatus, kitchen appliances, and irons. The number of workers in the industry increased from 111 in 1955 to a peak of 21,200 in 1987, and the output of the industry jumped from HK$5 million in 1955 to a maximum of HK$7.558 billion in 1987. More than 90 percent of the electrical appliances produced are for export.
