ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a detailed example of an application of the MuSIASEM toolkit using Mauritius as a case study. It shows the application of both the diagnostic mode, characterizing in quantitative terms the actual metabolic pattern across scales and dimensions, and the simulation mode, checking the feasibility, viability and desirability of possible scenarios, in relation to the nexus, integrating the quantitative information in MuSIASEM with a spatial analysis of metabolized flows in GIS. The case study illustrates the type of insights that the Sudoku effect within MuSIASEM can provide when discussing policies for development of a given socio-ecological complex. When discussing possible future scenarios, and when dealing with a 'not viable' Sudoku in MuSIASEM, it is important to recognize the lack of feasibility and viability for solutions and thus to look for a different solution, which can be expressed through knowledge, can be easily changed and which numbers cannot be changed at all.
