ABSTRACT

When Denmark is looked upon from a more general European perspective, four areas mainly stand out as being different from general European developments. It is noticeable that in each of these areas Danish sport has made a significant contribution. First, Denmark was, and to a large extent still is, an agricultural country. Not only in the economic sphere through the Danish cooperative or shareholders’ movement but also politically and culturally, Danish rural society has achieved great success. As late as the 1960s Danish agriculture contributed more to Danish exports than Danish industry. Furthermore, even today the leading Danish governmental party is Venstre, which originated in the countryside.
