ABSTRACT
What is to be made of Chinese military innovation? How important is it? Will it yield significantly enhanced Chinese military capabilities? What are its implications for the United States and its allies and friends? These and other critical questions about Chinese military innovation must be addressed systematically and analytically. Fortunately, the rich literature on the nature of military innovation, its components (hardware and software alike), and the spectrum or range of military innovation enables us to frame Chinese military innovation and assess its progress and prospects. Chinese military innovation is neither sui generis nor unprecedented.
