ABSTRACT

The term household is not consistently defi ned. Many varying terms and criteria are used to defi ne a household. For Bongaarts (2001), a household is defi ned as a group of persons (or one person) who make common provision for food, shelter, and other essentials for living. On the other hand, Dungumaro (2008) defi nes a household as the arrangement of persons according to their relationship to the head of household, whereas Goldstein and colleagues (2000) defi ne a household as a person or group of persons related or not that usually live together in one or more dwellings, eat together, take care of their daily fundamental needs together, and are under the responsibility of a head whose authority is recognized by all members of the household. This defi nition was derived from the defi nitions in the various countries’ census forms.
