ABSTRACT

The FAIRR (Farm Animal Investment Risk & Return) Initiative was created to close the knowledge gap that many investors have around the sustainability (or lack thereof) of intensive livestock farming.

The FAIRR Initiative works as a collaborative network for investors to encourage awareness of the financial risks involved in investing in factory farming systems and companies, and to realise the values and rewards associated with other investment opportunities, such as alternative, sustainable proteins. Investors can help drive a more sustainable food system by using their influence to address the risks of intensive livestock production and to ensure long-term sustainability. A landmark investment risk report (FAIRR, 2016) highlighted 28 environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues associated with intensive farming methods that could be materially significant to investors. These include threatening human health, contributing to climate change and pollution, endangering food security and consuming scarce environmental resources.
