ABSTRACT

Great socio-economic and political inequalities typify the realities of Brazil and one important pillar in the maintenance of these inequalities is the racist machinery of state and society. Officially Brazil is described by the authorities of the government as a non-racist country which offers equal opportunities for all. Racism in Brazil is a potent force, in particular because it permeates every area of national life, affecting great numbers of people. Among the black movements there is considerable diversity and imprecision about the meaning of community education and even of what the concept of black community is intended to convey. The concept of liberty and the celebration of human experience in the Afro-Brazilian culture is closely related to our freedom of body movement. The African community movement takes every opportunity that presents itself to promote the existence of the Afro-Brazilian identity and to counter racism in its many forms.
