ABSTRACT

The Gospel has to sink into the thinking process, the attitude, and the vocabulary of the people, if it is to make its lasting impact upon the life of the whole person and the whole community. Great emphasis should be given to the use of African languages in communicating the Gospel, and in making Christian concepts assimilated in the life of the Church. Key words of Christian vocabulary can be produced in booklets, and explained from the pulpit and during catechism instructions. Christian life is empty and meaningless without the Sacraments which are the channels of God's grace. The Church as the Body of Christ is herself the living channel, par excellence, of communicating the Gospel. Indigenization must include every aspect of the Church's life—personnel, ideas, and institutions, as well as such items as symbolism, architecture, music, etc. Many churches in Africa strongly emphasize Baptism and either minimize or ignore the Eucharist.
