ABSTRACT

This part introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters. The part considers that the discussions at the Seminar had thrown up two points which seemed to constitute a dilemma or contradiction. It suggests on the one hand, that Christianity made progress best in situations of social upheaval and change and, on the other that it should try to integrate itself with the traditional pattern of life if it sought to be fully effective. The part focuses on the problem of the churches in Africa as follows: Christianity came in with European colonialism; how are we to prevent its going out with European colonialism? It describes the emphasis which the contemporary Witnesses place on literacy classes in rural African society. The Churches have always been in the vanguard of African development and indeed possess a splendid record in endeavours for the general advancement of the people.
