ABSTRACT

The chapter provides in vitro evidence for potential α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitors so as to generate the stronger biochemical rationale for further in vivo researches and clinical studies on diabetes. According to the Ayurvedic system of medicine, F. bengalensis, F. carica, F. glomerata, F. exasperate Vahl and F. arnottiana Miq. are well-known in the treatment of diabetes. Traditional systems of medicine used plants and herbal extracts as antidiabetic agents. Traditional systems of medicine used plants and herbal extracts as antidiabetic agents. Therefore, investigation of such agents from traditional medicinal plants has become more important, and researchers are competing to find new, effective and safe therapeutic agents for the treatment of diabetes. Flavonoids and polyphenols are being used to treat diabetes and dyslipidemia. This is based on the fact that, excessive oxidative stress is implicated in the pathology and complications of diabetes mellitus.
