ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes the concept of interface casting, whereby any electrically controlled environment or device can broadcast digital information regarding its operation to mobile devices such as phones and tablets. It examines the issues associated with the implementation of an interface casting model within this already accessible digital environment. The chapter provides the evolution of accessible personal devices such as the smartphone and tablet, and how this has impacted on users with disabilities. It analyses how more modern technology such as the cloud and the Internet of Things has been further beneficial for this group. The premise of interface casting is, in part, to 'solve' the eternal issue faced by people with disabilities, especially physical disabilities, of being able to 'reach' things. The chapter concludes with an analysis of the benefits and likely challenges that an interface casting model would bring to people with disability regarding their access to the latest technological developments.
