ABSTRACT

Community awareness, responsibility and co-operative efforts are absolutely vital to the conservation and improvement of the environment. The management of the environment requires an approach based on public awareness and community participation. Since more and more participants came from youth nature lovers already familiar with nature expeditions, the objectives of the programme were modified. Several new interest groups grew from these previously hobby groups, working from creating community awareness, advocating environmental issues and community aspirations, to empowering the community to try to solve their local environmental problems. With the strength of co-operation and networking, Nature Conservation Training (NCT) programme managed to achieve quite a lot with a relatively small financial resource. The programme also attempted to provide concrete skills in examining and analysing environmental issues, as well as solving local problems by focusing on specific topics. Seminar-type discussions were held both indoors and outdoors, where participants discussed conservation principles or shared experiences and concerns.
