ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests some of the guiding principles that might form part of an expanded international programme of education for ecodevelopment the combination of environmental and development progress, and to spell out the role that organisations like International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) might play in the future. The poor people had generally forgotten traditional modes of subsistence, and in some cases, in a syncretic world of old and new, these modes in themselves were obsolete. The Commission on Education was the first Commission to be formed and immediately took action to ensure that establishment at all levels. In 1974 the International Environmental Education Programme was established by UNESCO and UNEP. Environmental education also entails practice in decision-making and self-formation of a code of behaviour about issues concerning environmental quality. Regarding the international level, there is also need to promote environmental ethics and transform educational systems to promote sustainable development.
