ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to develop a generalized model for multi-axle vehicle handling and analyze some influences on vehicle handling of steady-state and transient-state. A 3DOF vehicle dynamic model is established firstly. By dint of the steady-state roll angle, the 3DOF model is converted to a 2DOF model and the basic concepts of vehicle handling which are analogous to the two-axle model can be obtained. For the steady-state, the expressions of equivalent wheelbase and steady factor are derived and some influences are discussed. For the transient-state, the expressions of root locus are deduced and the effects of steering delay and steering ratio coefficient to vehicle handling are analyzed. It’s significant for assessing the steady-state and transient-state turning characteristics of multi-axle vehicles.
