ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a state in between mobility and immobility: pausing. While contemporary society may emphasize constant motion, some elements seek to shut down mobility or channel it elsewhere. So how do urban places change when flows fail to move freely? Are paused objects and people part of the urban landscape in a different way than fixed or mobile objects and people? Can the state reduce pauses to minimize negative impacts, or are they simply redirecting the problem? These questions are considered through delay or waiting; stillness and affect; rhythms and multiple mobilities; and flow or circulation.
