ABSTRACT

The smart city is now a prominent model of urban development. Among its many promises is the optimization of urban transport and mobility. In this chapter we first illustrate the concept of smart city and its many incarnations across the globe. Second, we discuss smart transport as a core element of smart-city agendas. Here we focus on automated and autonomous systems of traffic management, and on autonomous self-driving cars. Finally, we conclude by critically evaluating the potential benefits and dangers of smart urban transport, from a sustainability perspective.
