ABSTRACT

Freedom of speech has traditionally been a cause championed by the left and liberal side of the political spectrum, against conservatives who have sought to limit the expression of radical ideas. Today we still see some cases in which conservatives seek to keep people from the left off the campus. Recently, however, we have seen something different: a section of the left actively opposing freedom of speech. What are we to make of all this? Should we echo the famous remark commonly, though apparently, erroneously attributed to Voltaire: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”? Or should we say that some speakers cross a line and should not be tolerated?
