ABSTRACT

This chapter presents selected forms of dance movement psychotherapy (DMP) interventions, considering theory and research findings, illustrated by clinical vignettes. Reasons to go beyond words in the treatment of trauma precede a brief introduction to dance movement psychotherapy (DMP). Subsequently, four DMP interventions are discussed: nonverbal kinaesthetic empathy and reciprocal interaction to facilitate attachment; ethical and mindful use of touch to support self-regulation, attachment, and self-acceptance; body-based image schemas projected onto metaphors to access and transform central traumatic triggers and themes; and finally, choreographic process as a means of externalising dysfunctional inner models and developing coping abilities.
